Mammoth Cave
Today our adventure took us to Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. First of all, Kentucky is beautiful. I never realized it but they have magnificent mountains that are so green. When we got to Mammoth Cave, we listened to a ranger for a while, then walked down to the cave. It was sort of like being in a horror movie because every step closer to the cave, it got a little colder. There was also a mist going over our heads moving pretty quickly. When we turned the corner, a waterfall came into view that was absolutely gorgeous.
After we walked down the stairs and into the cave, the temperature dropped dramatically. We walked a little bit, being careful to watch our heads. All of a sudden we walked into a gigantic cavern. Up until that point I was curious why it was called Mammoth Cave, but I don’t think mammoth is grand enough for that room. According to the National Park Service, it is 192 feet high and is the largest cave in the U.S.
We explored the cave for about two hours, then headed out. Afterwards, we took a hike to where the river in the cave starts. It was amazing. You could see where the water trickled in and then got deeper.
We accidentally got on the wrong trail back and and walked an extra mile, but I didn’t mind. The trees where huge and the animals didn’t care that we were there at all.
