Lewis and Clark Cavern

After a long drive we stopped in the middle of nowhere to go to Lewis and Clark Cavern. Fun fact, Lewis and Clark never went in the cave. They went through the valley right below it. In fact, native Americans didn’t even explore it because they thought the cave was on fire. The winter in Montana is very cold, but the cave is about 45 degrees year round. So when that warm air rises it’s picking up condensation and water droplets, and when it comes out into the freezing Montana air it looks like steam. We had to hike along this cliff to get there. After waiting for the other slowpokes to catch up with us at the entrance, the tour guide opened the first door. After walking through a tunnel through the rock we entered the grand finale room!

Sadly most of the cave was closed, but the grandest room was the one we got to see. This was by far the coolest cave we’ve been into. The orange color that you see is from iron. The tour guide told us a little about how the cave was formed and after answering all of his questions because we’re cave experts (this was our third cave in two and a half weeks) we moved to the next half of the room. For the grand finale the guide turned off all the lights. It’s not often that you can’t see your hand on front of your face. The record for staying in the cave with no lights is 50 hours. I started to go crazy after 5 minutes. I wish I had gotten to see the rest of the cave but this was still one of the best I’ve ever been in.
